Alzheimer's and gum

Recent research demonstrated the further relationship between dementia and gum disease bacteria. According to the journal Science Advances, the study discovered the bacteria identified with chronic gum disease known as Porphyromonas gingivalis in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s, which boosted the production amyloid-beta associated with Alzheimer’s. The study progressed to testing new drugs, which are believed to be the basis of a human treatment against Alzheimer’s and are meant to be tested on people later this year.

Scientists that did not take part in the research claim that it is still not certain that the bacteria are involved in the development of Alzheimer’s, as people who suffer from the condition are disposed to getting brain infections. By any means, the relationship between gum disease and dementia was previously noticed. Last years, numeral studies found that people with a high risk of Alzheimer’s who had gum disease suffered from a quicker rate of cognitive decline. Anyways, they did not deny an alternative that people with Alzheimer’s are less able to maintain good hygiene to their teeth and gums.

All in all, researches still believe that gum disease is not the key risk for Alzheimer’s and, moreover, it is not the only cause of the disease. Nevertheless, oral health is essential for the overall wellness and should be of higher priority.
